I've got a 1981 Audi Coupe I rescued before it went to the junk yard (hole thru block) last year, and now I don't know what to do with it. I could not let this extremely solid (near rust free) rare 81 coupe go to waste so I trailered it home and put a block from an 85 4000 (was 2.1, now 2.2) in it. I kept the old close ratio 5 speed with the mech clutch, and put on the best starter/alt/fuel from the parts cars. The interior has black GTI seats, and door panels need some work. I've got a ton of spares to go along with, while gathering parts for the coupe I ended up parting two rusty 4000s. The color is silver (respray) with what appears to have been blue inside, now mostly black. The Odo and title show 45k, but I'm not claiming it as real. She's got brand new motor mounts, CVs, and clutch, tires are great, and the body is VERY, VERY solid.
The negatives are-  The interior is a bit missmatched, but easy to fix. The worst rust on the whole car is a 2" circle behind the driver's front wheel. I drive it daily, but snow is coming and I fear this rare example will be ruined if I drive it in our salty winters here. I don't have a radio in it, and some of the dash wiring needs put back (defoggers/washers) but all the basics are there working well. For a serious buyer I would be glad to put it on my lift and do a photo shoot of the undercarriage. 
I've been searching and have found very few 81 Audi's left, this is the first year of the Coupe. It wasn't even a GT yet! If you want a rare, solid 2-door 5-speed German coupe for cheap, this may be your car!
