Description:
PICTURES.

1996 Audi A6 Avant, Quattro with a 5 spd. Manual conversion performed about 8000 miles ago. When my nephewâs automatic C4 Quattro died, we located this car a short distance away with an automatic transmission that was mechanically fine, only the transmission computer was shot.

Because of the carâs condition, I chose to swap the automatic transmission into his car, keeping this car for myself and swap a manual transmission into it. In the process, I have gone through pretty much the entire car and replaced A LOT of parts to bring it up to snuff. Iâll never get back what Iâve put into it, but with 2 kids and a house to finish, it is time to move on.

The interior condition is about an 8 out of 10 and is what sold me on keeping the car in the first place. The leather seats are in great condition with no rips or tears. Power seats (with memory) work, as do both heated seats for driver and passenger. Door panels, carpets (no mats) rear seats and cargo area are also in great condition. There is the reverse facing, 3rd row seat as well. The hatch door trim is complete and solid. In many of these cars, the panel covering the inside of the hatch has come off due to exuberant slamming of the rear hatch door. Not here - plus there is also the manual sun shade that covers the rear window that is in perfect working order.

Everything on the dash works, save for 1 or two dash bulbs that could be replaced, which I have. Both power side mirrors work. The automatic climate control works great, with cold AC, but the heater core gave up last fall. I currently have the heater core bypassed. The radio shown in pictures is not included but I do have the original head unit if desired, but it does not work. Otherwise, this came with the optional Bose system and all speakers and subwoofer work fine. Only other major issue on the interior is the lack of a sunroof control panel (see picture) I have the original, but as with many of these, the tabs are broken. Speaking of the sunroof, I have not tested it to see if it works. I believe there is a blown fuse, but thatâs as far as I got. FWIW, at least it doesnât leakâ¦..!

Exterior is rust free and save for a few nicks and scrapes is probably a 6 out of 10. Some paint work was done at some point on the rear and driverâs side rear quarter. No signs of major damage/repair work done, so I figure a minor fender-bender occurred at some point in its life. To be honest, the rest of the car could us a good compound rub to get everything more uniform.

Mechanically, Iâve put in more than I can reasonably expect to get back. My loss is your gain, blah, blah, blah⦠Sooo, where to start: Well, I had the motor completely out of the car during the swap of the original, automatic transmission into my nephewâs car. This allowed me to look over everything and made replacing the exhaust manifold gaskets much easier. Any and all rubber vacuum hoses were replaced. A new AC accumulator was put in as well as a new oil cooler. New valve cover gaskets were installed and the entire throttle assembly was taken off and cleaned.

Front lower control arms have been replaced as well as all the bushings, including those for the stabilizer bar.

New motor mounts and transmission mounts were installed along with a front subframe bushing that needed replacement.

The transmission is a 5 speed (donât remember the code) with fresh gear oil and has a NEW flywheel and clutch. Shifts great and makes the car much more fun to drive than the lethargic 4 speed auto. Front drive shaft/CV joint assemblies are NEW, not rebuilt. Rear differential was replaced with a unit equipped with the proper gear ratio to match the manual transmission, and filled with new gear oil.

Brakes: I replaced all 4 brake calipers with newly rebuilt units, including new pads and even new flexible lines. Handbrake cables were also replaced.

Car comes with the 16 in. wheels shown and original 15 inchers are included. Tires only have about 7000 miles on them, but two have some wear on the inside due to a bad alignment job. To get it done properly, a new, right tie rod (and tie rod end) were installed as was a left tie rod end.

Overall, a mechanically solid car that has seen A LOT of work done (Iâm probably forgetting a few things) and only a few issues to be addressed. More pictures available by request.
