Spoke too soon... Front end clunk still there!

damn it! it's back.  thought the inverted strut mount washer was the culprit
but now i suspect the struts.  removed struts and noticed there wasn't much
resistance on the down stroke, only on the up stroke.  is this normal for
spax gas adjustables?  i have a brand new kyb gas strut i have laying around
in the garage and there's substantial resistance on the down stroke and not
as much on the up stroke.  thanx.
