Oh, okay.  Anyplace you can get sized o-rings?  IME
the problems are ALWAYS in this portion of the rear
calipers, not in the piston area.  You will likely
find rust down in there which keeps the piston rod
from retracting.  You CANNOT remove the brake lever
shaft without removing that "pill".  That's what's
hitting when you start to retract it.

ps- Which "northwoods" are these?  I wasn't aware that
anyplace in North America wasn't satuated with
Autozones, Wal-Marts, or McDonalds.  Tell me such a
place still exists!
