You were, but I wish you hadn't been. I've long been
disappointed with the performance of WD40 as a loosening
oil. It has its uses where there is a little movement already - I
cheerfully use it (yes - gallon sizes) on exhaust manifold
studs. Forward 5 degrees, WD40, back 4 degrees, WD40,
forward 5 degrees, etc. Works well - serious care, time, and
lots of lube brings almost every stud out well.
I'm less convinced of the properties of these magic fluids
where there is no movement at all. The reasons can be
legion - simple rust, galvanitic corrosion, overtightening when
hot, etc. I don't know of anything (except Coke Classic?) that
works in all these situations.
But I don't have access to Kroil, although I've heard very
good reports consistently.
I spoke to Martin Parker (ex BR Motorsport) about the issue
today - he recommends getting the engine seriously hot,
which others here have also suggested.
As an aside - I have today received a letter from one David
Faulkner, signing himself as: 'Managing Director, BR Motor
Services'. David has a very short haircut with a round and
precisely flat top - it is mostly bleached blond with the very
top 4mm died bright orange. He has the management skills
of a frond of brown seaweed, and his skills as a receptionist
must carry some of the credit for the original organisation
going bust in the first place.
