Actually, I believe the suggestion here is to create a 5-speed from a
formerly automatic car. Thanks to John Karasaki we have proof positive that
the engines in the automatics are indeed compatible with the quattro
transmission, so there is no doubt it is possible. Given David Head's
experience with having a transmission rebuilt for a more reasonable price, I
think that I might be more in the camp to have the automatic rebuilt and
reinstalled in this case. It does not appear that the V8's automatic is
prone to the same sorts of failures as in some of the older type 44s. Now
that MH2K is over I'll be starting on my own automatic to 5-speed conversion
in a FWD 5000S, and I've got to say that there are a handful of niggling
details that need to get worked out (making room for the MT accelerator
pedal and shift linkage are the major ones, and there are other more
specific problems that I can skirt as I have a MT engine and exhaust that
I'll be putting into the car). The issue of the halfshaft & propshaft
lengths would be at least one more thing to deal with when contemplating a
conversion on a V8 ...
