sunuva b***h, that was it. taped a piece of cardboard on the bottom of the
strut w/a few layers of duct tape, took it out for a short ride around the
neighborhood over some of the meanest potholes i could find (even those that
in the past were guaranteed to reproduce the clunk/thunk) and it was gone.
man, how simple was that! unbelievable! i could have spent countless hours
and $$$ and never figured it out. you're a genius kris!

Bill, by any chance is there play between the strut
insert and the housing? I had that problem on my 80,
and it took a bit of shimming to get it to stay put.
Seems that a previously installed strut insert had
wobbled around a bit and caused the housing to grow a
tiny bit, enough to allow the new insert to move,
causing a very annoying clunking noise, as well as
vague steering.
