Tonight was a very good night for me and my 4ktq. Nate Stuart came over
at around 6 or so and we started out testing the fuel pump to find
numerous fuel leaks around some of the fittings and such. One of the
leaks was coming from the supply line which I ended up using a little pipe
tape on which seemed to do the trick.. Of course I'll try replacing the
hose too..
Anyhow, once the fuel issues were sorted out Nate tackled the ECU wiring
and hooked up power and such so we jumpered the fuel pump and tried
turning it over.. No spark... hmmmm. So out comes the test lite and we
pulled fault codes. code came up for the ignition reference
sensor. turns out I had the connectors mixed up between the two
sensors. Doh! Thank goodness for fault codes!
So with that sorted out we turned the key one more time and after a few
stumbles waiting for fuel to fill the injectors for the first time she
sputtered right to life and idled quite nicely! Once the car was running
nate set about setting up the fuel pump relay.. Initially he thought he
could just use the 4kq relay and both Nate and myself came to the
conclusion that this was a bad idea since the 4k relay isnt' set up to be
shut off by the ECU for overboost. Because the fuesebox isn't set up to
have a switched ground for that pin, Nate moved the relay to the drivers
side auxilliary panel.
With that all set we started the tq up again to check for afterrun stuff
once it warmed up. Amazingly the afterrun pump worked just like it should
have when we shut it down. The thing sucked down so much coolant (this
was just before the thermostat opened so there was a lot of air still in
the system) that it cleared out the resevoir in a matter of seconds! I
quickly filled the tank back up and kept topping it up as more air was
purged from the system.
A quick look at the O2 readings from the sensor in the cat showed that
the mixture was a little lean on idle. Nate went to look at the
adjustment screw and we discovered that it had never been drilled out! So
out came the dril :-). Getting the damn plug out was easier said than
done but eventaully it came out with a slightly magnetized ice
pick. turning the scre resulted in a slightly richer mix (as far as we
could dicern from the exhaust smell) since for some reason the CO tap
didn't appear to be showing valid readings? Not sure if that was my meter
or the wiring..
So anyway, the only 2 open issues right now on the car are the radiator
fan
coming on after the car is off and the coolant gauge in the dash not
moving (I suspect a faulty multi-function sensor).
Anyhow, Many Many thanks go out to Nate Stuart and Huw Powell for helping
me out
with the electrical aspects of the car. Without there help, the car would
be staying in the garage for much longer!
Later!
