Besides, Audi wants like 120 bucks for the sucker. Anyway, it was the inlet
air temp sensor. One of the wires had broken off from one of the connectors
inside the boot. A judicious crimp and voila, problem solved. Incidentally,
the current ETKA at the dealer also shows the temp sensor in the wrong
place. It is, of course, on the intercooler near the exit.
Thanks for your help everyone who responded. I also replaced the WOT switch
and ye olde spark plugs for good measure. The car now has satisfactory
performance, but still won't pull past 1.0 bar. But that's a problem for
another day. Thanks guys.

... don't just replace the sensor because someone told you its bad! Have
you pulled codes from the ECU? I had a problem with the check engine light
coming on in light boost situations ... it was a bad knock sensor ...
another common malady on the MC-I engines.
What version of TFA do you have? Remember that most of these are from
Europe, so it may not include your car exactly. I've also seen cases where
the illustration does not exactly match what the part looks like or where it
goes. My '88 5kCSQ Avant has a temp sensor that mounts in the intercooler
just as you are describing ... whereas the urquattro has a temp sensor
mounted to the intake manifold downstream of the throttle body ...
HTH!
