Fellow q-heads,
I finally did it! Not only are you hearing a from an 'ol time
q-lister again, but I finally have some good Audi news to
report. If ya didn't know yet, I bought a 1993 urS4 #46664.
69k miles, Tornadorot, Anthricite leather, phone, no CD, and
15x7.5 Speedline equipped OE winter rims. This replaces my
1989 200 tqw that I sold to fellow lister Bill Rowe. Thank you
again Bill. The OE Speedlines on the S4 are nice looking, but
not my type of sneaker holders. The S4 came with stock black
Audi steel rims and Hakki NRW snows also. (I have other plans
for the Speedlines -> future family camperwagen -> '91 Vangon Westfalia...).
Future NEQ gripsters are in the works too! To say that I'm
pleased with how well the urS4 works is an understatement. The
best Audi quattro I've driven to date. Hey, I'm partial, we
like der big
Audis.
After many days (weeks?) of Photoshop work with different
rim combos, I seriously tried them all (my wife thinks that
I'm nutso - but hey this is real stuff hear dear!) I finally
came back to my original choice of Carrera Cup rims. Yup.
These were originally fitted to the Audi RS2 and fit the time
period of the urS4. Being a Porsche person, they also fit me.
I wouldn't have any problems 'living' with these for a long
time. They just happen to have a fittement for 5x112. On
rennlist.com the Cup1's are known for the production x-ray
technology and track worthyness. They are unfortunately ALOT
heavier than the 15 Speedlines, but most, if not all 17 rims
are. So I called up Tire Rack, and in a few days I was
gleeming. 4 17x7.5 ET35 Carrera Cup rims with 225/45-17
Bridgestone RE730 tires arrived. After the first few miles the
difference was astonishing. Initial turn-in is instant with
zero sidewall roll. Nice. 225s were choosen for the Vermont
rain storms we get. We plan to do a few track events and my
wife will be the primary driver. So, street driving is the
main stay.
The best part of the Carrera Cup rims was that I could
proudly wear a "Thompsonized RS4" logo I created using the
Porsche "RS" America script and the typograpical "4" that is
planted on the Boxter tach. Within a few hours after bolting
these new beauties on, my x-acto blade was gettin jittery, so
I adorned each center cap with a "RS4" logos and made two also
to match, fitting on the black side mouldings just behind the
Audi logo. Kewl. BTW, the "R" in my "Thompsonized RS4" logo
stands for "Rory, or "RENNWGN" (yes, I transferred my plates),
or "Red". We name are cars - and I'm sure most of you do to.
The other upgrade was to call Keith Anderson (even before
I bought it!) and order four gas slotted OE Zimmerman rotors
with PBR pads all around and lots of Super Blue Racing Fluid.
I know, I could have slapped some Porsche Red Brembos on, but
that's what my PORSCHE is for... This is my wifes. Maybe next
year when this setup gets ground down I'l do Brembos. I will
report on the upgrade after I get them on. Probably good for
the street only, as I've seen urS4s almost take out Big Bend
at LRP before after a few hot laps on OE brake systems. Next
on the list of mods is a K&N, and rallye style mud flaps.
After doing the similar upgrade to my 'ol wagon and
completely dialing in the brakes right before I sold it (well,
Bill R. finished the ABS part...) I was amazed at how well a
completely stock, midly upgraded (with slotting and PBRs) OE
brake system works. This convinced me to do it to the urS4.
The rebuilt rear calipers were the charm and grinding off the
rust on the slider pins in the rear probably helped alot too.
Call me crazy, but I installed stainless lines on the rear
only on the ol wagon. The front lines were fine and I
therorized that more rear proportioning would go to the rear.
You could feel the rear grab very well after that. When I sold
the wagon, I did include the front stainless lines for Bill. I
don't know if he has done this yet? Bill any comments?
Anywho, back the der neu "RENNWGN", all this talk of MTM
urS4 chip upgrades has filtered into my little head and being
a major car guy, the wisp of shifting and turbos has got the
best of me. Who the hecks cares what the wife thinks right? -
when there is a tricked out Audi urS4 or new S4, 951, 930,
993, 996, ZR1 'vette, or other fast car that wants to 'play'
when I'M driving our urS4 it better move as good as it looks
and uphold the Audi marque!
For those of you that took the time to at least read all
of this giberish, here are pics of der RENNWGN on 8.19.00 at
the "Rover Fest" (I know, work related) at Killington Ski
resort. Boy did that Audi sure stand out amongst those muddy
Land Rovers. The guys at work constantly badger me. Wait till
I take them for a ride in the snow...
Totally enthralled, livid and proudly strutting around in
der nue RENWWGN Audi urS4.
