No, you don't have a WJ engine - just a WJ block.  Odd blocks are not
unknown in early WRs.  If it was done under warranty, the Audi database
may still contain the relevant records - you seem to need the registration
number at the time, the VIN, and a helpful dealer.

Aluminium engine blocks appeared around 85-F-900nnn.  Is your VIN in
this area?  Two of the 'odd block' cars I've seen were probably
originally fitted with aluminium blocks.
