I finished replacing the Power Steering Return Line on my '92 100S last
night. This project was a bear. The connection on the steering rack is a
complete pain to get at (I did not want to remove the brake/vacuum booster
as suggested in the Bentley manual).
Thanks go to Peter @ Audionly who suggested using a rubberband around the
threads of the banjo bolt to keep the gaskets and bolt from slipping off as
I guided the fitting to the steering rack. Once I got the threads started
back in, I snapped the rubber band off and tightened the connection fully.
I did have to bend the fitting slightly to match the bend of the old hose.
This made it easier to get the threads started. I refilled the system with
1qt. of Pentosin, cranked the wheels L/R and there are no apparent leaks.
There is very little room to reach back to the steering rack and turn the
banjo bolt by hand to start the threads. A helpful and patient child or
spouse with slender arms/hands would come in handy here. Mine didn't fit
the bill, as a result my hands and arms are sore and scratched up :)
Hopefully this will cure some of the spots on the driveway. But, I still
think I'm losing oil from somewhere.
