All ISPs are available in some 'free' form now - you pay via the phone
calls - a proportion of the charge is siphoned off for the ISP. There
are now 'all you can eat' deals - a fixed charge for unlimited
connection time, sometimes all day, sometimes off-peak. These services
have appalling internal bandwidth problems and are next to unusable
from 18:00 (start of cheap rate) until about 23:00. Anything faster
than a standard 33k modem is hideously expensive, and the cheap rates
to use 33k are dog-slow - slower than my 9600 baud modems used to be.
When I'm mobile, I use a cellphone limited to 9600. This has size
filters in it so it will only pull down messages smaller than about
4KB. Anything bigger waits until I get home.
