Ned told me that the diaphragms he supplies are carbon fiber based ... but I
guess I don't quite understand what additional functionality this would
provide over the factory unit for the difference in price. Contrary to the
statement at the top of the message attached, replacement diaphagms are
readily available at the dealerships here in the USA ... BTDT. The problem
is that the P/N for the diaphragm is not broken out on each and every
wastegate on TFA ... like some other parts like the bushing on the cruise
control rod. If you poke around you can find them. The Audi P/N for the
diaphragm is all over the archives ...
While the rebuild kit for the turbo may not be available from Audi, I
understand that such things are available from OEM sources.
I realize that the somewhat disparaging comment about the parts Audi makes
available was probably made somewhat with the tongue in cheek, but I thought
I'd point out that it isn't too likely that Audi orders anything but
complete turbos from their vendors ... probably true of the wastegates as
well when the cars were built ... while those of us who do our own work
would certainly wish that each and every individual part that goes into the
car were available, that would pose a bit of a logistical nightmare for them
... so they choose what level to break things down ... and I'm not going to
try to second guess them. That said, just because Audi doesn't supply a
replacement part doesn't mean that one can't be found or fashioned from
other sources. I suppose that is sometimes true for parts that could be
obtained from the dealer as well!
