mechanic needed ?

Hello out there !   I haven't been in here for quite a while, hopefully
someone out there can point me to a reputable mechanic. I'm trying to help a
work associate of my wife locate a mechanic in the Peabody Mass area. His
daughters 87 4KQ was diagnosed by Ira Audi as needing a new tranny to the
tune of around $3k. (It's an automatic)  His daughter says that if you watch
the center drive shaft while the car is rolling, it has a wobble where it
leaves the tranny and hits one of the supports, causing a thump-thump-thump.

Does his sound reasonable ?  The guy has already said he doesn't plan on
"investing" $3k into the car since it's probably not worth close to that but
I can't see him junking the car either.  I'd love to go look at it myself
but it's pretty much out of my area, any suggestions ???
