Yes you are missing something.

What is commonly referred to as the "check engine" light *IS* the
ignition system warning light.  On the type 44 turbos (and many other
Audi models), the ignition, fuel and turbo boost are all managed by a
central ECU, and the that warning light (the engine symbol with a
lightning bolt across it) is a sign that a fault has been detected
by that ECU and a code has been stored.

The alt/charge is a different light, with a battery symbol.
