When I have to band boxes (even knitting gets heavy in quantity), I use a 
black textured plastic band and a clear plastic clip that works something 
like a pair of D-Rings.  I just tested a piece of the banding by holding it 
in front of a hair dryer that gets hot enough to burn my fingers, and there 
was no sign of melting.
