Phil,
Can I really remove the water pump for cleaning and seal replacement without
getting into a complete timing belt job and removing the Crankshaft Pully
assembly. I took a look at project GTQ 2.3l mounted on a stand and did not
see how to do this without removing that metal plate in front of the pump.
It certainly would be even more difficult with engine in a car.
I was hoping to just tighten the pump to tension the belt. It definately
needs tightening. I'm wondering how much of a leak I might induce, perhaps
one not serious enough that it can slide 'til I get to do the complete job.
The amazing thing is the belt has never come off even though i can easily
deflect the belt 1" or more.
Thanks for your great advice.
Ben

<Your problem will be that residue from the old sealing ring will stick
to the block and prevent you from getting a good seal with the pump
in it's (slightly shifted) new position.
You need to remove the water pump completely (a bit fiddly, but it does
come out) and clean the face of the block behind it. Then fit a new
sealing ring (035 133 557), reassemble with the bolts loose, fit the
belt and tighten it up, holding it tight with the bolts.><snip>
