I'm no expert on the Sport, but I spent a happy half hour or so talking
to the International Sport Quattro Club's technical guy at Woburn
Abbey a year or two back.  He's Swiss, as it seems most of the owners
present were.

It was a bonnets-up session, and I noticed that a lot of the cars had
what can only be called a plate between the block and the head.  About
4mm think, I would guess, and made of a quite bright steel.  Apparently
(and I've also heard this in the USA) the Sport block has a tendency to
be cast porous - the factory selected the best blocks for the 500+ bhp
rally cars and let the not-quite-so-good blocks go into the consumer
300+ bhp cars.

The Sport Club has apparently developed this plate as a partial answer.

I don't know much more about this, since we had a number of other things
to discuss, such as how one member had managed to bring both his wife
and his daughter - and we spent some time wondering how the daughter
managed to fit in the back of a Sport.  Actually, I think a lot of the
time was just spent absent-mindedly perusing the daughter.
