Problems Removing Radio '87 5K

I need to remove radio from this '87 5kcdtq.  I lost the serial number and 
code.
Have the genuine VW/Audi/Ford/Skoda radio removal tool set.
Left side releases.
Right side won't.
Spent just over 2 hours messing with this and gave up.
I even tried some small stainless wire but I can't get the right side free.
I suspect that the p/o or whoever tried to remove it in the past used something 
they shouldn't have and bent the clips.
Any former thieves out there with some secrets they can share?  I'm really not 
keen on ripping the console apart unless I have to.
