update on alternator noise over speakers

You probably have a power cable running too close to your crossovers.
Listen closely to the noise and see if you can determine WHICH speaker(s) it
is coming from. If you have component speakers with crossovers located in
the doors then you will likely hear it coming from only one speaker..
otherwise if you have some centrally located crossover then you might hear
it from all or half of your speakers.

On my 4ktq I had run the battery cable from the engine to the trunk and my
cable came too close to my crossover in my passenger side door.. causing the
whine you describe. 2 ways to fix: Move the cable or crossover to a
sufficient distance apart (in playing with it, I had to move the cable at
least a 1.5 feet away from the x-over to make it stop whining) OR put a
metal "sheath" around the power cable and ground the sheath. That's what
Audi does with all the important signal wires that run to the ECU such as o2
sensor and such (although that's to protect the signal from noise, not to
prevent it from creating noise in your speakers but the effect is the same).
