I'm willing to bet that it's worn (shot) bushings in the trapezoidal control
arm. Had exactly the same symptoms in my 87 5KTQW. Replaced the bushings
with new (courtesy of the parts connection and my local machine shop). No
more thunk and handling much improved as well.

check that the hatch lock is tight by pulling on it while locked. if not,
loosen 2 nuts/bolts, and adjust.

Subject: Thump/Thud in rear
In my '91 200 wagon, I hear a thud/thumping noise coming from the passenger
side rear wheel well area when I go over *any* bumps. I've had the shock
out (and replaced) and it didn't solve the problem (so I put the original
back...). While things were apart, the ball joint and suspension pieces
were checked - still didn't help. Any suggestions, BTDTs?
I can't seem to track it down. Thanks in advance. You (collectively)
always come up with the right answers...
