You under-exaggerate. In Wisconsin, you need to be 15.5 to get a permit,
and 16 to get a full blown license. There is no *real* training - such as
how to drive, or how a car handles, or anything. A poorly trained monkey
can (and apparently do) pass the US driving test. Most people here don't
even understand how a four way stop works. It's really pathetic.
Douglas Frank said:
* pass a written test-in preparation for which, it's usually
sufficient to read a 50 page 'rules of the
road' booklet twice
through
* prove you're not totally blind
* be 16 years old
hooray! you now have a "learner's permit"... now:
* 1-2 hrs behind the wheel under instruction of some retiree
hired by the local school board
* 6 months under instruction of your parents, so you can learn
their bad habits as well as invent your own
* drive around a parking lot with a cop in the other seat,
without
knocking over any orange cones
* be 17 years old
hooray! you're as good as Mario Andretti. Go get 'em, tiger!
Listers-do I exaggerate?
