trouble reading DTC codes from '95 90Q......please advise

When I go through the process for reading the DTC codes as described in the
www.12v.org website, I always just get one code that repeats endlessly.  I've let
the process continue for 20+ minutes and never see any change in the code or any
sign of completion.  I thought maybe it was possible that this one code had just
registered that many times, but I kept getting the same result even after the codes
were reset and presumably reduced to a reasonably small quantity.  Furthermore, the
code I get is not necessarily one of the ones that the service shop will pull up
with their handy computer.  Am I doing something wrong?  Is there anything I'm
missing or something different that pertains to my year/model specifically?  Please
let me know if you have any insight.  Thanks,
