On my '88 5ktq, I had one speaker in the rear intermittent.  I checked the
"Duo sound" thingie, and found the circuit board was cracked along one of
the contacts.  As I never plan on using the "cut out the rear speakers and
pipe audio to the headphones" position, I cut the circuit board with a fine
saw, removing the switches, and then soldered the contacts for permanent
rear speaker connection.  Now my rear speakers work just fine.

You could likely effect the same repair with some paper clips or other wire
shoved down the connector for the circuit board.  As I recollect, I tested
it this way before doing the circuit board modification.
