Porsche brakes on a 4000tq (Todds coil-over conv)

I'm not sure on the fronts but I know its possible. Just not
sure whats involved. But you dont have a 4kq, you have a type
89 dont you???
I do know this though. I just put type 89 2-piece rear struts
on my 4kq. Modified with coil-overs. They basically bolt right
up and no alignment problems. BUT... there are 3 problems and
two advantages.
Advantages.
1) Lighter weight. They weigh about 8lbs less per unit. Thats
with Coil-overs so about 5-lbs per strut assembled normally
maybe. Less unsprung weight.
2) They are 2-piece which makes it really easy to do rear
suspension work. Want to change spring rates, or try different
valving for rear shocks, just 3-bolts. Its out. Pull a CV
joint or replace a bearing. You dont have to pull the rear deck
to remove the strut and spring assembly. YAY.
PROBLEMS.
To get the 5ktq or 4kq hubs to work you have to machine down
the outside of the bearing houseing about 1/10th of an inch. I
think I did 90/1000's actually. Or else the hub will rub. :-)
WHich brings us to problem #2.
#2) Now the rotor and carrier wont fit. Grrrr. I machined
up a spacer to go behind the rotor. Now before I get flooded
with E-mails chastizing me, I dont recommend this and I only did
it because I had no option at the time. I needed transportation
for the next few days and didnt have time to go back to where I
was. And I needed my 5-bolts in the back so I could mount my
Snow tires. (VERY cold here in Eastern Washington) That said,
my 1/8" spacer works great and I have yet to have any wheel
wobble or rotor wobble with it. NOTE....I'm using re-drilled
4kq rear rotors.
But, I made an interesting discovery while delving into
the parts bin to find out what I could do to fix this. 4kq
front rotors with the 5kt front carrier (not G-60 but G-54) and
the G-54 caliper would almost bolt right up in back. Just need
to ovalize one hole on the caliper slightly. (laterally,
IE...closer to the other hole) That setup would work great it
appears if you are willling to use a line lock as your E-brake.
And you'd have vented rear. WHichh you dont need unless your
rallying. :-) Hmmm, gues what this car will be doing in a few
years. :-)
#3. You may need a spacer to space out the CV joint about
1/4" or so. I havent verified this. Ron Wood who sold me my
Coil over kit. (MUCH higher quality than the Aluminum
component systems some people sell, and is a nice tight fit over
the rear struts with no spacers) runs this on the Rally Car with
no problems. But I have not installed my spacers yet as it
appears I have enough movement. We'll see..... I'm carrying a
spare CV in the trunk for the moment. :-)
As for the fronts. I saw a Coupe GT with the 90CQ front
suspension at a Rally. Snapped an alloy control arm on the
first stage. Light weight is great for road but I guess you
need more strenght for the rally stages. :-) I still havent
gotten around to getting 944t front calipers on my 5kt struts.
(very close to working) But I do need a ball joint larger than
the 4kq to work with my 5kt struts. Isn't there a 90q ball
joint that is larger. Either ur-q size or larger?
That said, I love my Coil-overs. Love my 5-bolts. Love my
slotted rotors. Love my Hawk HPS pads. Love my 11" front
brakes. Love my Turbo. Love my Gislaved Snows. :-) Love 14psi
boost. :-)
THanks for listening
