There is no way to disable the ABS on the newer cars,
but with snow tires there is reall no need to as I
found this morning. My '98.5 A4 Avant q just slowed
easily with little drama, and I was pleased at how the
ABS behaved itself. Without snow tires is a dofferent
story altogether though, as we found out when we first
go the '96, the first drive on snow with the pathetic
all season tires resluted in very long stopping
distances, and some heart stopping moments at
intersectioins. This was on the way to get the snow
tires from my garage.
As for the diffs, they lock automaticaly. Seamlessly
too. Plus, you know how on the older cars they tend to
get the rear swung out to the right under hard
acceleration, well the newer cars just go straight. It
is difficult to upset the A4 even on ice. Compared to
my old 80q, which seemed to love to understeer, the A4
just drives as if there was no snow on the road.
totally different, much improved. Go for a drive in an
A4/A6, you will be pleasantly surprised!!
