Because "EDL" is Audi's term for traction control. Sort of an electronic substitute for diff locks that works by applying brakes on a slipping wheel. Works up to 45mph on the later models, I think (front and rear). Works only laterally on the same axle (ie, left to right, but not front to back across the cetner- torsen- diff).
It's cheaper than diff locks because it only really requires some reprograming of the ABS system. Also requires no driver input.

Oh no, then why does the Audi USA web site say:
"Drivetrain quattro® all-wheel drive system with
Torsen® center differential and Electronic
Differential Locks (EDL)" in regards to the A4's
drivetrain???
> It's seemless because they aren't actually locking.
> The diffs are open, and not lockable.
