The country of origin for a car has little to do with the company where the
country is based, but more where the car is made. However, the headquarters
of said company is considered the home of the car, and as such American
assembled Hondas, BMW's, Toyotas, and Nissans (and at one time, VW's) are
imports, German and Austrian assembled GM's are domestic (to the US), as are
Canadian and Mexican built GM's and Fords. There was a test of cars not too
long ago in Car and driver - a toyota vs. two americans - the Catera and
something else. The only one assembled in america was the Toyota, but the
article read "Japan takes on the US....". I believe that no bettles are made
in Europe, but actually they were imported there after the US market got
them. Same with the X5 and Z3, which are imported from the US. And remember
back to 1978, when the Rabbit (Golf) went to square headlights in the US?
It signaled the entrance of VW to the US market as a producer, in the
Westmoreland plant. My 86 Golf was built in detroit. Until the 90's, only
the high performance VW's came from Germany (Gli, Corrado, GTi 16v).

Later!
Carter
