upper front strut bearings

Having recently completed an entire suspension rebuild on my 90 coupe quattro
myself, and taking into consideration it has the two-piece strut assembly, it
is possible to remove the upper part of the assembly alone. It isn't quite
as easy as Huw pointed out, as in order to remove the the lower of the bolts
(of the two that attach the strut tube to the hub assy)you'll need to remove
the caliper. It simply won't go in or out with it attached to the hub,
besides the fact that it's almost impossible to get at with a wrench with it
on there.....and without removing the bolt, it won't come off...period.
Obviously I'm assuming that your 90q20v has the two piece strut assembly,
which i think from remembering Bentley, it does. Earlier 90q's had a one
piece setup, in which case you had to remove the entire unit, as Chris
pointed out.
REGARDLESS, you'll need spring compressors to compress and hold the spring
while you remove the slotted nut and replace the USM.
good luck.
email me with any other questions regarding this "fun" little task.
