Thermostat and MF sensor - how to?

What's the trick for replacing the thermostat and multi-function sensor in a 88 5kq I-5 engine?
The thermostat is buried under the hydraulic pump. The sensor is also hard to get at - needs a large size socket or bear claw wrench - - going to Sears in a few minutes with the sensor and get both tools.
To me it looks like the long way is the short way . . . remove the brake line from the hydraulic pump . . . disconnect pump and lift/swing it out of the way . . . then disconnect the radiator hoses . . . then remove the sensor and thermostat.
Anyone have a simpler method? It's snowing now, so I'll get the tools and wait a day or so before tackling this.
If you have a heated garage, I'll give you a case of beer if I can use it.
