The answer to your Honda question is yes.  I also bought a new "American Car" 
when VWs were made in PA.  This was one of the worst POS cars I ever owned.  
Aside from the terrible workmanship, the porous engine block which leaked oil 
into the coolant system, the suspension was "tuned to US specifications" 
which made it handled like a Chevette.
