I have owned two Westmoreland Golfs.  One, an '85 GTI
lasted for 201000 miles before I took it off the
road->salt started getting too much to the rear half
of the body-I bought it as a fixed up wreck and the
body work wasn't up to OEM spec.  Paid $7k in 5/1987
with 21K on the clock.  PO must have been spooked by
it.  Sad it was a Rochester NY car for starters as the
salt usage in my hometown is among the tops in the
USA.  Once it gets in there, well, you know the rest
of the story.

I still have an '86 Golf Diesel that I estimate has
230~250 K on it (broken odo).  yes, the coolant gets
contaminated with oil...that happened in the past year
and appears to be a bad head gasket, maybe too a
warped head.  That car is off the road until I can get
around to working on it.  Had it since 9/96 (Raleigh
NC all its life to that point in time) when I bought
it for $2000 from a local VW dealer tech...best used
car dollar for dollar I ever got until the one below:

The '91 Diesel Jetta (German) replaced it-I got that
in July with 72K on it for $1800...needs trim work but
runs ok.  Someone at my last job was given it from her
dad, and she was wondering in the office "how am I
going to sell it?" when the Chief Engineer of the TV
station (me) wanders in and exclaims "did you say
DIESEL??"  Sure, she could have done better by putting
in the paper, but she was reminded that the '86 Golf
was getting me to Boston every week from Philadelphia
and that it would have a good, loving home.  This was
a Tex/New Mex car that has only spent 1 or 2 winters
in the frosty North.

So I got the car instead cheap...

Now about my '93 100 and '86 5kTs...I guess they
appeal to the masochsitic in me.  I am secretly
waiting for a Passat TDI or an A3 body TDI jetta to
add to my collection.
