Can't wipe the grin off my face, it's impossible. Since my car is in
the shop getting the flooring welded up for the tranny support I had the
immeasurable pleasure of driving mummy's 200q20v avant. All I can say is
yoowsa!
I took it to get washed and vacuumed, sorely needed. The once beautiful
paint has faded and is covered with swirl marks, dents, dings, even some,
dare I say it, rust. The wheels are chewed looking, but only on the outer
lip. Little bits of sticky goo on the steering wheel, center console, and
driver's seat. Sad story it is. Though once inside and driving it doesn't
even matter anymore. New clutch, good pedal feel, brakes with new bomb,
lines, pads, rotors, and refurbed UFO's. The gear selector is nowhere near
as neat and sharp as the one in my 80, though 195k miles will do that to a
shifter. Stomp on the gas and all that fades away quickly, like my brains
are falling out of the rear of my head, just pleasure centers remain. At a
stop light this car can beat anything, played with a 911 C4 and this damn
wagon stayed with a Porsche, smiles were had.
I come to find out after getting the car home that it has had nearly
$15k of electrical, clutch, engine, and brake work done on it within the
last two years. The engine revved smoothly to 7k rpm and quattro did it's
work very well. Those UFO's are quite powerful, but the pedal feel is way
too mushy for my liking. The car needs shocks and springs, badly, and the
steering column feels like it is slapping around on bumps, weird feeling.
Though a less weird feeling is getting a huge wagon like that totally
sideways on a loose dirt S turn and all it takes is a little steering to get
it back, just awesome! Those of you with urS4/6's, RS2's, 20v's, and
conversion cars are lucky bastards. Off the line, turn the wheel, stomp on
the gas, and it's like being in a muscle car:)
If there's a list to get one of these cars, sign me up!
