Patrick,
First order of business would be to get the Bentley manual.
It's quite possible you have more than one problem. 20 mpg may be
normal... it's about what I get around town in my 4kq and I think it is
well tuned. I wish it wre better tho'.
Your timing may be retarded by the previous owner deliberately jumping a
tooth on the timing belt. Could you contact him to ask? The Bentley shows
how to check the alignment of the timing marks and you would be able to
tell if this was done by the way the marks line up.
My car had been raced/auto crossed by the PO, and this is what he had done.
It had no power below about 4,000 rpm, and would barely idle. But above
4k rpm ... Woo Hoo! I changed it back to the stock timing and it's much
better for street driving.
Another possibility could be a plugged fuel filter... there are two, or
maybe three? I know that a plugged filter will definitely restrict power.
There are many other possibilities, but I would think if the car was raced
things like fuel filters would have been routinely addressed.
