Slow fills at Gas Station on 86 4kq

Ah, the 4kq gas curse! Every 4kq I have owned (3) has been funky at the pump. 
If I pull the handle out slightly (a couple of notches on those spiral things 
that swirl around the metal nozzle) at 12 gallons then raise the pump way up 
it seemd to help, still wont reach full though. It's odd, my forst 4kq used 
to fill up way past the full mark, now it sometimes doesnt even hit it. I 
think this might have to do with my switching an entire instrument cluster to 
get a functional odometer.
