Not to beat this to death, but that is the exact
procedure my father showed me 20 odd years ago.  He
learned it in 1940 in machine shop major at Dickinson
High School in Jersey City, N.J.  Got to be something
to it.  Obviously there ARE other ways including
beating it in with a rock.  I think the question
becomes did you shorten its life expectancy at all? 
IME the alignment of the inner race/outer race/and
balls is critical to long life/quiet operation.  Any
stresses or twisting of this alignment shortens its
life.
