Analysis of a "chip" mod

I just thought I'd pass along something I saw today ... I got a MAC-11C
which has a mod which I understand was done by one of the widely known
vendors. When I opened up the box I found a poorly installed R-Z mod on the
pressure sensor ... and a socketed chip ... upon further investigation the
chip that was installed in the socket was a PROM (i.e. not eraseable) and
had a label of "MAC-11C" laser etched into the device package. It certainly
appeared that the PROM had the protective coating that is normally sprayed
on the MAC-11. It certainly appears that the stock chip was pulled and
stuck into a socket!
Since I don't know for sure who really did the mod I won't mention any
names... just thought I'd pass the tidbit along ... anyone looking to get
"chip modded" ECUs really should make sure they know what they are getting
for their $$$ ...
