... well, I did a bit of poking around myself ... In "A50T" ... which shows
from '80 to '88 ...
If one checks the years prior to 1984 the only tranny option was automatic
... but from 1984-on the 5-speed is listed ... seems to me that one or more
of the beasts may have made it to this side of the pond. Since the "5000"
model wasn't used in Europe it does indicate that they were indeed here in
the USA.
The reason a FWD turbo will seem to be quicker is a lot more than the
difference in weight ... since you can break the wheels loose the engine
will get up into the power band sooner ... fine if you want it I suppose,
but I prefer to wait a second and not have to worry about torque steer ...
... can't say I've ever seen one myself (have seen a surprisingly high
number of NA FWD 5-speeds though) ... but if I see a post from someone on
the list who said they saw them when they were new I would tend to believe
them ...
