snow tires

Thanks to Sean who let me know that Direct Tire carries Nokians...

I picked up a set of Nokian NRWs on Saturday for my wife's Audi A6 quattro
wagon. Much nicer tire than the Hakka 10 which we had on her last Audi, and
what I used on my 740 turbo wagon. These tires drive almost as well as the
Pirelli 4000s that were on the car. Reasonably aggressive tread, looks like
it will do well in snow.

A tech specialist at the US headquarters for Nokian said that this tire was
a better choice than the Q for everything but heavy snow, and for that the 1
or the old 10 would be the best bet.

Just as a quick aside...the clever lads at Direct Tire, which is considered
the *best* shop in the area, screwed up both my vehicles (neither badly). I
took my Range Rover in for a simple 4 wheel balance and rotation...balance
was better before they touched it. On the way out, I lost one wheel weight
(100 yards from the shop), and on rebalancing, found 2 wheels out of
balance. Doh.

On the Audi, they got the balance right but figured (I guess) that the car
would drive well with three tires at 34 and one at 30 pounds.

Nothing catastrophic, but it pays to check the results after someone else
works on your vehicle.
