Can I Install Non Quattro Rear Shocks on a Quatto

It’s my understanding that rear shocks on Quattro wagons are unique (and, of
course, somewhat expensive).  Just out of curiosity (and because I’m cheap!)
I installed non Quattro KYB rear shocks ($40 ea.) on my 89 2ctqa which
bolted up w/o a problem.  I started hearing a rear end clunk shortly
thereafter or it may have been there all along but I just didn’t notice it.
Anyway, is it merely a coincidence or incompatible non Quattro shocks?
