I believe the D6 is an anaerobic "loctite" type of compound which means it
will only harden in the absence of air. That is why loctite bottle are not
filled to the top - they need an air space so the liquid won't harden. As a
side note, when I took my first engineering job out of college, I worked
closely with an engineer from loctite on several projects. At that time,
Loctite had only 4 grades of their product, a thread sealant and 3 grades of
thread locking compounds - but they private labeled their products to OEM
manufactures such as Caterpillar, GM, Ford, etc., etc., and had hundreds of
unique names for the original 4 products. A few later when their patents ran
out, there were instantly about half a dozen copy cat companies such as Stay
Loc, ThreadLoc, etc., which made the same product at half the price. Soon,
they all had private labels too. I strongly suspect D6 is one of those.
As to why it is specified, I'm not sure. To the best of my knowledge neither
VW or Porsche does this. In fact we used coat the VW spines with grease so
they won't rust together from the road salt. Maybe the Audi engineers are a
little anal or they met up with dur fast talking Loctite salesman.
