i have plans brewing for my 4kq.. but before i let them get to carried away
will the NG 2.3 manifolds fit on 4kq block? better yet.. can i put the whole
head on my 2.2? i know i will have to do some custom vacuum setup.. and
possible idle stabilizer changeover.. but will this work (in theory)?

The NG intake manifold will only work with an NG head. The reason for
this is that Audi moved the injectors from the head to the intake manifold in
the NG. The NG head is also a good upgrade due to the larger intake valves
and more agressive cam specs. Honestly, however, the best, most sensible
swap would be to use the NG bottom end with the stock JT head and induction
system. An even better decision would be to install the later knock sensing
ignition, or use a J&S knock sensor to prevent detonation from the higher
compression engine. To say the least, premium octane fuel will likely be
required to curb detonation.
