K24 turbo

Mark,
I have been running a K24, going on 2 years+ in my 86 turbo (OEM is K26) and
had no trouble regarding knock.
The advantages are:
Much quicker spooling, you start getting boost at 2nd gear and sometime even
on first gear
No problem with boost, with my upgraded chip I get close to 1 Bar, and had
it up to 20PSI (a little high though)
Due to the quick spooling the car is transformed and power comes on very low
The car feels a little "picky" somewhat like a two cycle (narrow power band)
but that is not much different than the K26
I lost about 2-3 MPG at the high-end, highway and 4-5 MPG at low speed city
driving
The K26 was averaging (city driving), 16-18 MPG
The K24 is averaging 13-14MPG (city driving)
The K26 was averaging 24-28MPG on highway driving
The K24 is averaging 23-16 MPG on the highway

I hope the above info. helps.

Ultimately the K26 is less "chocked" at high speed (racing track) but that
is not something the averege driver will notice. I suppose with better
breathing, read larger exhaust it could be a little better.
With the K24 the car is "much tranformed and I wouldn't go back to the K26,
although I still have it (the turbo).

Take care,
Avi

You'll probably get more responses to this post, but the way I understand it
is that the K24 is a smaller unit (smaller diameter) than the K26 which came
on the 5K's. This results in less lag, but may also give less potential
boost (probably not noticable due to the wastegate). I have heard something
about the K26 being less susceptible to detonation (knocking) in high
altitude areas, but I'm not sure about that. As far as other mods necessary
to make the change work, I don't know of any. One thing - most 200's (which
used the K24) were equipped with the dual knock sensor setup (this would tie
in to the detonation thing, I would guess. I don't know if the lack of a
second sensor will create any kind of problem.
