The pump I think you're referring to is located on the driver side of the 
head above the #2 & 3 cylinder. It is operated by a push rod run on the 
camshaft. You can easily eliminate it as a possible source by removing the 
pushrod, and running the engine. If the noise disappears, you have found your 
source. Otherwise you need to replace the lifters.
I replaced the lifters on my CGT a few weeks ago, and found it wasn't as bad 
a job as I had anticipated.
