The owner's manual should explain the dual-mode operation of the trunk, if
it is like my '91 200q: insert key and rotate clockwise to push and open,
but the key can be removed in either a horizontal or vertical orientation.
One way, the trunk lock operates in sync with central locking and the other
way it remains locked all the time, opening only via [master] key.
A while back my car seemed to go into permanent key-only mode, so I opened
up the lock mechanism and discovered that there was a ball-bearing and
detent setup that functions as the "memory" to retain the locked/unlocked
state of the trunk - mine was jammed at "locked". I removed the ball
bearing, so now my trunk lock operates with the central locking (the mode I
leave it in) but will sometimes forget that it is supposed to be unlocked
after a drive, as certain bumps in the road cause the lock to move.
