I had an exceptional experience recently.

In the Bay Area, the number of car enthusiasts is a small subset of the
people with nice cars. The unfortunate result of this is that, when you
speak with a lot of enthusuasm about your Audi, you may INITIALLY be
perceived as someone who buys a nice car just to impress other people. As a
result, I typically avoid cars as a subject with anyone who doesn't know me
really well. I also try not to subject innocent passengers to my, ah,
controversial driving tendencies. But still...

A couple weeks ago I was driving a co-worker home from a club in my '90 80q,
and she brought the subject of Audis up... "so, what do YOU think about your
Audi?". Now, if you're like me, you could easily stand up in front of a
crowded auditorium and talk for hours and hours answering this very
question, so the following answer required considerable restraint. "Oh, I
don't know, it gets me from point A to point B, I suppose", was my forced
response.

It was at about this time that she tried to raise the passenger window,
which, of course, doesn't work anymore. Clearly the Audi gods were getting
angry.

After getting several dull responses from me on the subject of cars, she
said, "I bet you can't guess what car I drive." I am usually pretty good at
this game, and based on what I knew about her, I said "pickup truck". She
smiled, so I assumed I was close. I blathered on and on about how that
would be a practical car to have, driving to the ski slopes, going to bike
trails, etc, and she kept smiling, so I knew I had that all figured out.

Yeah, I've got it all figured out. She's a practical person that drives a
pickup, right? As she was leaving the car, she said, "Oh, by the way, its
too bad you think cars are just a means of transportation. I actually drive
a new A4, and I absolutely love it. And another thing... you drive like my
grandmother."

She closes the door on her way out, and of course the window works again...

Call me "the ladies man".
