what the HELL is that sound? 4kQ....

Here's an idea. Check the rubber accordian-style boot under the car that covers the
linkage between the shift lever and the gearbox. If the sound occurs in 1st, 3rd,
and 5th gears, chances are there's a crack in that boot that opens up when the shift
lever is moved forward. The noise is normal gear/engine/road noise that is allowed
to enter into the passenger compartment when that crack is open. I had this problem
in my old 4KQ and it baffled me for a long time. Not sure how much a new boot would
cost or how much of a pain in the ass it would be to install. I just stuffed some
sound insulating material underneath the ashtray where the sound was coming in -
problem solved. Let me know if that works,

so, now, sparatically, my gearbox, or something in the drivetrain, sounds
like a learjet takeing off. High pitched whirr, almost like straight cut
gears (BTCC BMW320i - know what I mean?) speed related, not effected by
clutch, diff locks, comes and gos, no apparent pattern - and not horrible,
but noticable, and slightly disturbing. Any ideas? Something going south in
the gearbox?
Later!
Carter
