FWIW, for your driving test here they teach you to adjust your door mirrors 
so that you see the tiniest bit of your own door in the inside corner of 
the mirror. This enables you to judge distances in relation to your own car.
I've yet to drive a car where this doesn't give a decent viewing area, 
though some mirrors are less useful than others (like those pesky new VW 
and Audi passenger-side mirrors).
