Oil smell & check engine light

Scott,
Ideally, the 2 problems would be related, but I doubt it. The oil smell
maybe coming from the infamous valley pan oil leak (oil fills up the "V"
between the 2 cylinder banks, then leaks down the rear of the engine when
level gets high enough and drips onto the exhaust), or may actually be the
tranny leaking (same deal, drips onto exhaust). I have had both occur on my
'92 in the past. As for the check engine light, why not just pull the codes?
There is an excellent description on the 12V pages on how to do so, and the
page also has all the fault codes listed
(http://www.12v.org/maint/dtc.html). HTH.
